Healthcare System of France

The French healthcare system is a universal healthcare system that provides coverage to all residents of France. It is funded through a combination of social security contributions, earmarked taxes, and patient co-payments.

Statutory Health Insurance (SHI)

This is the basic level of health insurance that is provided to all residents of France. SHI is funded through social security contributions and earmarked taxes. It covers most medical expenses, including doctor visits, hospital stays, prescription drugs, and dental care.

Voluntary complementary health insurance (VHI)

VHI is an additional layer of insurance that can be purchased to supplement SHI. VHI typically covers co-payments, dental care, and other expenses that are not covered by SHI. About 95% of the French population has VHI.

Public Hospitals

Public hospitals are owned and operated by the government. They provide a wide range of medical services, including emergency care, surgery, and maternity care.

Private Hospitals

Private hospitals are owned and operated by private companies. They typically offer a wider range of services than public hospitals, but they are also more expensive.

Universal coverage

All residents of France are entitled to healthcare, regardless of their income or employment status.
