As a yacht crew member, you navigate breath taking landscapes and experience unparalleled adventure. But this incredible lifestyle comes with a unique responsibility – ensuring you have proper health coverage, both at home in South Africa and while traversing the globe. Here’s where understanding the key difference between Medical Aid and International Health Insurance becomes crucial.

Medical Aid provides valuable healthcare cover within South Africa’s borders. It’s a fantastic option when you’re on home turf. However, the moment you set sail, your Medical Aid’s coverage ceases to exist. International Health Insurance, on the other hand, steps in as your global guardian. It offers comprehensive medical coverage wherever your yachting adventures take you, providing peace of mind and financial security no matter where you drop anchor.

Medical Aid: A Great Local Option, But Not for Global Yachties

Medical Aid is fantastic health insurance in South Africa, providing  medical cover within the country’s borders. It’s ideal when you’re back home between contracts or enjoying some well-deserved leave. However, for the adventurous souls who call the world their workplace, Medical Aid falls short.

Here’s why: Medical Aid coverage is geographically limited to South Africa. While some providers offer limited travel benefits (think 90 days of travel insurance), this is hardly enough for a career that takes you island-hopping between the Med and the Caribbean. Imagine a medical emergency while chartering in the Grenadines – your Medical Aid won’t be there to pick up the tab.

Furthermore, yachting careers are often seasonal, with home stays lasting just a few months. While Medical Aid provides valuable peace of mind during these periods, the monthly premiums may not justify the limited coverage for the rest of the year spent navigating international waters. Essentially, you’d be paying for protection you can’t use most of the time.

International Health Insurance: Your Global Medical Guardian

International Health Insurance (IHI) is your passport to world-class healthcare, no matter where your yachting career takes you. Unlike Medical Aid, which is restricted to South Africa, IHI offers comprehensive medical coverage throughout your global adventures. Whether you’re cruising the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, navigating the majestic fjords of Norway, or exploring the exotic islands of Southeast Asia, IHI ensures you have access to quality medical care.

Here’s what makes IHI the perfect fit for the yachtie lifestyle:

Global Coverage: Unlike Medical Aid’s territorial limitations, IHI acts as your global guardian. It provides financial security and peace of mind, knowing you’ll be covered for medical emergencies anywhere in the world.

Seamless Transitions: No need to worry about coverage gaps between jobs or during your well-deserved breaks back home. IHI seamlessly bridges those periods, ensuring continuous medical protection throughout the year.

Flexible and Adaptable: IHI understands the dynamic nature of your career. Some providers allow you to update your location periodically, with your monthly premium adjusting based on the country you’re in. This ensures you’re only paying for the coverage you need at any given time.

Regional Options: Many IHI providers offer regional coverage options. For example, Europe and Africa might be grouped under one region, while the USA might require a separate “worldwide” plan. By understanding these regional variations, you can choose the most cost-effective plan for your specific routes.

With IHI, you can navigate the world’s waters with confidence, knowing you have access to quality medical care wherever you may be.

International health Insurance Providers

As a broker, we work with a number of international health insurance providers however not every provider covers the USA and many do not cover Dubai. Not every provider offers the same plans, all offer the same basic hospital plan and then from there some require you to add on dental and vison cover, whereas other may include that cover if you need out-patient.

Like most things in life, there is no one size fits all solution to a yachtie’s health insurance. Some may want cover for doctors’ visits, while other just want a hospital plan. The most important aspect of yachtie’s health insurance is that the policy will cover them no matter the country they are in.
