Why Greenies Need a Schengen Visa

Green yacht crew, also known as newbies to the industry, require a Schengen visa to legally work and travel within the Schengen Area. Think of it as a single visa granting access to 26 European countries! This visa allows you to move freely between these destinations while fulfilling your yachting contracts.

Popular Yachting Destinations in the Schengen Area

Spain, France, Italy, Croatia, and Greece are just a few of the hotspots for yacht jobs. Obtaining a Schengen visa increases your chances of securing a position in these yachting havens.

About the Schengen Visa

The Schengen Visa (Type C) is a short-stay visa specifically designed for temporary visits to the Schengen zone. The typical validity period ranges from 30 to 90 days, depending on your application and purpose of stay.

There are two main types of Schengen visas:

Single-entry visa: This visa allows you to enter the Schengen zone only once during the validity period.

Multiple-entry visa: This visa provides you with the flexibility to enter and exit the Schengen zone multiple times within the validity period.

Where to Apply

You should apply for your Schengen visa at the consulate or embassy of the country you’ll be entering the Schengen zone from.

When to Apply

It’s crucial to apply well in advance – visa processing times can vary. Don’t risk missing your yacht joining date by waiting until the last minute.

The Schengen Visa Requirements

Requirements can differ slightly depending on the specific Schengen country. If you already have a secured job, you’ll likely need a different type of visa altogether. For any visa inquiries, Pull North Yachting is here to help!

Essential Requirements:

Medical Insurance (minimum €30,000)

Schengen countries are not obligated to cover your medical expenses. This  travel insurance ensures financial protection in case of illness or injury while searching for a job. You won’t have to worry about unexpected medical bills, and your personal belongings are also covered in case of theft or damage.

Here’s why Medical Insurance is Particularly Important for Green Crew:

  • Provides coverage before you secure a job, offering peace of mind during your initial job search.
  • Offers financial protection you might not otherwise have as a new crew member.
  • Covers medical emergencies, repatriation (transporting you home in case of serious illness or injury), and medical evacuation if long-term care is needed back home.

Minimum Coverage:

Medical emergency insurance: Covers medical bills incurred during your stay.

Repatriation coverage for death: Ensures you can be transported home in case of a tragic event.

Medical evacuation insurance: Covers transport home if you require long-term medical care unavailable in the Schengen zone.

Coverage limit of at least €30,000: Meets the Schengen zone’s minimum requirement.

Coverage lasting for your entire stay: Ensures you’re protected throughout your time in the Schengen Area.

Yachtie Health Insurance Recommendation:

While the above points outline the minimum requirements, we strongly recommend investing in specialized yachtie health insurance once you secure a job. These plans offer comprehensive coverage tailored to the unique needs of seafarers.

By meeting these visa requirements and securing the proper Schengen visa, you’ll be well on your way to launching a successful yachting career!
